Moffat and Beattock are the hub for travel, tourism and other businesses in central southern Scotland. All we need is a local station. Beattock, made famous by WH Auden’s poem The Night Mail, is sited on the West Coast Mainline on the longest stretch of line in Britain with no station – there are nearly 48 miles between Lockerbie to the south and Carstairs to the north. The local communities urgently need a station at Beattock to: give local people better work opportunities by enabling them to commute; increase tourism and benefit local businesses by making it easier for people to visit the area; enhance residents’ quality of life by making it easier for them to travel outside the area for employment, shopping and leisure; and improve the environment by reducing dependence on the car.

History of Clan Moffat
Our Clan’s origins are from one of the oldest families in Dumfriesshire and Moffats have played an important part of Scottish history, a Mufet being Bishop of Glasgow in 1268 and significant supporters of both William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.
Largely as a result of the murder of Clan Chief, Robert Moffat in 1557, the fortunes of the Clan declined and in the 17th Century their lands fell into the hands of other Clans and the Clan was ‘broken’ for over three centuries.
The Clan was revived and became one of the fastest growing clans in Scotland by Francis Moffat, who through 35 years of family history research was able to establish descent from the Moffat who was Feuar of Grantoun in 1342. He was recognised as hereditary Clan Chief and as Moffat of that Ilk by the Lord Lyon in 1983. On his death his daughter Madam Jean Moffat of that Ilk is now Clan Chief.
Many Moffats still remain in the Borders, whilst others sought to seek new lives elsewhere. Some achieved international renown. James Moffat, who translated the Bible into modern English, Robert Moffat, missionary, explorer and father-in-law of David Livingston. Martin Moffat who won the Victoria Cross for gallantry on the Western Front in 1918, Billie Jean Moffat (King) who won 20 titles at Wimbledon, Steven Moffat, comedy/drama writer and Scarlett Moffat, television personality/presenter.
We all live out our motto of “Spero Mellora” – ‘I hope for better things’!</span>

Our Clan Gathering will take place on 11/12 August 2023.

For information about Clan Moffat and/or joining our Clan please go to our website and Facebook Page where we will be posting/updating any activities we will be able to have this year.</span>

The MAD Red Squirrel Group has been established under the auspices of Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels (SSRS). The Moffat and District Red Squirrel Group (MADRSG), covers an area around Moffat starting at the Devil’s Beef Tub, extending to Carrifran and circling around Craigieburn, Johnstonebridge and well into the woodland to the West of the M74. The volunteers of MADRSG carry out surveys of the squirrel population, both red and grey. We provide information to interested parties how to look after reds they have seen, and trap and humanely dispose of greys in order to protect our native red squirrels. We are obviously very dependent on members of the general public to inform us of any sightings of squirrels and would encourage your help and would welcome new volunteers.

Moffat and District Wildlife Club began life in 1961 as the Moffat Birdwatcher’s Club, adopting the broader wildlife name in 1975. We run a series of monthly illustrated talks during the winter months (although these have been curtailed during the pandemic) on a variety of wildlife topics, to which all are welcome.

Membership is just £12 per year, or £20 for two adults at the same address, and free for those aged under 16 – it is open to all, not just local residents. The club is responsible for looking after the nature reserve at Dyke Farm. The reserve features a wetland area, two smaller ponds, two hides, a network of paths, woodland area, orchard and newly planted hedges along part of our boundary. It is home to a growing number of bird species, as well as mammals, plants, insects and amphibians and occasional visits from rarer birds and wildfowl.

Volunteers are always welcome to help us with our work at the reserve – we meet on a Wednesday and a Saturday morning, between 10.00 and 1.00. No particular skills required!

Moffat Community Woodlands (MCW) is a registered Scottish charity (SCIO) which exists to take on ownership and management of woodlands in the DG10 area. Membership is free, and people of all ages are welcome. Our volunteers help with tree planting and maintenance, and a range of other site management tasks. No particular skill is required, just enthusiasm! We manage Gallow Hill, which we purchased in December 2016, for the benefit of the local community and visitors to Moffat. We are replanting this former commercial conifer plantation as mixed broadleaf woodland, and expect to complete restocking during 2022. Our other plans for the site are based on the community consultation carried out prior to purchase and throughout 2017. Since 2018, for example, we have added natural play facilities, three picnic benches, a woodland shelter/forest classroom and some benches to rest on whilst walking up through the beechwood.

Space to Grow, Moffat has space inside and out at our Annanside site that we are
managing for community and environmental benefit. We have ‘growing spaces’ to let
(raised beds, allotments and poly tunnel plots) and are improving this provision over
the next couple of years. We are also expanding our community fruit production.
We are developing plans for a refurbishment of the indoor spaces to provide modern
facilities for community use, for artisan craft makers, for remote office working and
for small local businesses. This should ensure the financial sustainability of the site
and enable us to make financial contributions to other environmental projects and
activities in the Moffat area.
We are always happy to welcome new volunteers to help with practical tasks or as
trustees.

Visit Moffat is a constituted voluntary group, originally known as the Moffat Initiative.  Our purpose is to encourage more people to visit Moffat as the town’s economy, and 36% of our employment, is dependent on visitors.  We run the VM website at http://www.visitmoffat.co.uk and the VM Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/visitmoffat which, at its peak in the summer of 2022, was  reaching more than 120,000 people a month.

We work with several local groups and promote, and in some cases initiate, new events, such as the Moffat Golden Eagle Festival.  We will be campaigning again for Moffat to become a Business Improvement District: this was recommended in the Moffat Action Plan of 2016, and its aim would be for the businesses to work together on an agreed plan, funded by a small increase in business rates.  We believe that Moffat can, once again, be the jewel in the crown of southern Scotland.  We are fortunate to be a conservation town, conveniently situated midway between Carlisle, Edinburgh and Glasgow, are less than a mile from the A74(M), with motor fuel at non-motorway prices, 300sq kms of hills, more accommodation per head of population than Edinburgh, loads of shops, restaurants and cafes, and plenty of top-class sites for campers and caravanners.
We are always looking for volunteers, particularly on the VM Facebook page where we like to feature pictures and videos of this beautiful place, its hills, its wildlife, the many events and goings-on, and our unique heritage, which stretches back to the time of William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, our years as a major spa town, the birth of the railway – and Lord Dowding, born in Moffat and known as The Architect of Deliverance for his leadership during the Battle of Britain.
